Pre Game Notes:
The Cobbers were without All-MIAC forward Josh Spaulding last weekend due to an ankle injury. He is expected back for the Gustavus game. The Gusties, 3-1 in their MIAC preseason, beat St. Olaf 2-1 in OT in their MIAC opener Wednesday the 16th. Gustavus finished tied for second with Concordia last year in the MIAC with a 7-3 record. The 1-0 loss at Gustavus last year probably prevented the Cobbers from making a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Gustavus Preview information
By Tim Kennedy, Gustavus SID

Head Coach Larry Zelenz will be working with a young and inexperienced
squad in 1998 due to the loss of six senior starters from a unit that
finished tied for second in the MIAC in 1997.  Zelenz feels that this
year's team has the physical skills to be very competitive, but the success
of the unit will depend on how quickly his young and inexperienced group
responds to new roles.
Returning starters include senior captain Ryan Chies (outside back),
senior John Dierkhising (goalkeeper), and senior Greg Holker (forward).
Chies is a two-year starter who will be the anchor of the defensive unit.
Dierkhising is a top-notch goaltender, who has two-years of starting
experience to go along with one of the strongest punting legs in the
league.  Holker is an aggressive attacker with excellent speed and strong
skills in the air.  It will be important for this trio to provide
leadership to their younger teammates especially early in the season.
Finding some goal scorers will be an important task for Coach Zelenz
as the team's top five scorers from a year ago, Pete Eklund (11g, 8a),
Chris Holze (8g, 3a), Andy Hemenway (6g), David Rippe (1g, 5a) and Jeff
Jiovanazzo (2g, 3a) have graduated.  Junior midfielder David Cameron is the
team's leading returning scorer with two goals and two assists for six
points.  Holker contributed two goals and one assist for five points.  This
duo will be asked to increase its scoring potential along with senior
forward Bryon Smith who tallied one goal and one assist for three points
last year.  Sophomore forward Jacob Valento who started on the junior
varsity last season is expected to contribute along with senior midfielder
Scott Schneweis, who possesses the strongest leg on the squad.
Sophomore Scott Crowell will assume the center midfield duties.  He
was a starter on the junior varsity last season and played in two varsity
matches late in the year.  He is a skilled player who is up to the
challenge and Coach Zelenz feels it is just a matter of him adjusting to
the role as a varsity starter which may take a few games.  Joining Crowell
in the midfield will be senior Scott Schneweis, senior Ben Hallberg, and
sophomore Mike Orr.
In the backfield, outside defender Ryan Chies and goalkeeper John
Dierkhising give the Gusties a great deal of talent and experience.  Senior
Jeff Showalter will step into the stopper role, while sophomore Anthony
Marchetti will fill the other outside back position and talented newcomer
Lance Erickson, a freshman from Apple Valley, will start in the sweeper
position.
On paper it looks like this is a rebuilding year for the Gustavus
men's soccer team, but veteran coach Larry Zelenz has a knack for building
fundamentally strong, spirited squads every season.  Look for the Gusties
to be a formidable opponent in the MIAC and if they can find some scoring,
a threat to contend for the title.
