Player of the Week

Jim Jansen - Augsburg
Jr., Outfielder
Little Canada, Minn. - Roseville High School

In the last doubleheader of the season against Carleton, Jim Jansen shined from hisspot in the middle of the Auggies' order, going 2-for-3 in a 9-2 loss to the Knights and notching a 3-for-4, two-RBI performance with a run scored in the second game, a 6-0 Auggie win. Throwing in his 5-for-8 performance in a doubleheader against Concordia on Sunday, the Auggie leftfielder ended the final week of the season with a 10-for-15 performance at the plate (.667), three runs scored, three runs driven in and three doubles. Jansen finished second on the Auggie squad in hitting (.357 overall; .386 in MIAC play) this season

Pitcher of the Week

Christian Blanck - Macalester, Jr.
Minneapolis, Minn. - South High School

Christian Blanck helped Macalester sweep Concordia last Tuesday to wrap up a third place finish in the league standings. Blanck pitched to one batter in the first game, striking out the Cobber hitter with bases loaded in the top of the seventh to pick up the save and preserve a 4-3 win. Blanck pitched all seven innings of the nightcap, pitching the Scots to a 2-1 win by allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out six. He finished his season with an 8-3 record and 4.33 ERA.

Player of the Week

Tim Thoreson - St. Olaf
Senior Shortstop
West St. Paul, Minn. - Henry Sibley High School

St. Olaf shortstop Tim Thoreson hit .611 for the week, going 11-for-18 with three home runs, incluidng a solo shot that tied the game against Bethel with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.  The Oles went on to win the game in the 8th. He drove in 10 runs as St. Olaf went 4-2 on the week, splitting with Wisconsin-River Falls and Concordia-St. Paul and sweeping Bethel.  Thoreson is batting .463 on the season (.435 in the MIAC) with seven home runs, 12 doubles, and 44 RBI.

Player of the Week

St. Thomas' Ryan Hartung  (Senior, DH,  Apple Valley, Rosemount High School

Hartung continued his sparkplug role as leadoff hitter in the Toms' 5-0 week. He reached base 14 times in 22 plate appearances (.630 on-base%). He walked six times and was 8-for-16 with nine runs scored and three RBI in wins over Northwestern and sweeps of Macalester and St. Mary's. Hartung ran his hitting streak to eight games, and he's scored at least one run in 13 consecutive games. In 26 games, he's batting .432 with 11 doubles, 37 runs, 32 hits, 27 walks and only two strikeouts. Hartung has helped the Toms win 26 of their last 27, clinch their fourth consecutive 30-win season and move to the brink of clinching their fourth consecutive MIAC championship. The Toms are 30-4 overall and 13-1 MIAC. Hartung, an ice hockey All-American, will likely play on two MIAC title teams for the second season in a row.

Pitcher of the Week

Gustavus'  Rod Swenson, Pitcher, Senior, New Ulm, Minn. New Ulm H.S.

Gustavus' number one starter Rod Swenson compiled a record of 2-0 on the week as he allowed three hits in seven innings of work in a 3-0 win over St. Olaf followed by allowing just four hits in seven innings of work in a 2-1 win over St. John's. In the win over St. Olaf, Swenson struck out 8 and did not walk a batter. He only allowed one batter past second base in the contest. In the win over St. John's, Swenson struck out three and walked one and the one run scored against him was unearned. In 14 innings of work on the week, Swenson allowed no earned runs, seven hits, struck out 11, walked one with an earned run average of 0.00. Swenson is now 4-2 in the MIAC with an earned run average of 1.70. In 41.0 innings of work in league play, Swenson has struck out 31 batters and walked just six. He has also thrown five complete games.

Player of the Week

St. Thomas' Matt Faulken Yr: Senior Pos: Outfield Hometown: St. Paul High School: Central

Faulken continued his torrid hitting as he batted .667 (10-of-15) in the Toms' 5-0 week. Faulken had a 10-game hititng streak snapped in an 0-for-2 (also hit-by-pitch) game one vs. Gusties, but came back to go 3-for-3 in game two, 4-for-4 vs. Concordia-St. Paul and and 3-for-6 in sweep of Carleton. He had four RBI in one game vs. the Knights and scored six runs on the week. Faulken has reached base in all 28 games he's played this season and hit safely in 26 of 28. He's batting .527 on the season (48-of-91) -- on pace to shatter the UST season record -- and .519 in 10 MIAC games (14-of-27). The Tommies are 9-1 in the MIAC and 25-4 overall having won 21 of their last 22 games. They scored 65 runs in the 5-0 week and outscored four MIAC foes 48-2.

Pitcher of the Week

St. Thomas' Chris Olean Yr: Senior Pos: Pitcher Hometown: Minneapolis High School: Washburn

Olean ran his streak of scoreless innings to 17 as he pitched an unusual nine-hit shutout of Gustavus (6-0). He allowed nine hits in 3 2-3 innings before retiring the last 10 batters in order for the shutout. He fanned seven and walked none in getting his second complete-game shutout in nine days. Olean is 5-0 on the season with an 0.45 ERA with 55 Ks and only one walk. In three MIAC games he's 3-0 with an 0.86 ERA with 26 Ks and no walks. He improved to 13-1 in MIAC career decisions and is 20-6 overall. Olean now has 204 career strikeouts and needs nine to become the school record holder. The Toms, 5-0 last week and ranked No. 13 nationally, are 61-9 in MIAC games and 135-29 in Olean's era. UST had three shutouts and outscored MIAC foes 48-2 last week ti improve to 9-1 in the conference and 25-4 overall.

April 19, 1999 MIAC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week

Player of the Week

Concordia's Clayton Horgen (Jr.. 1B, Fergus Falls, MN) hit .642 (9-14) from the plate last week as the Cobbers won 3 of 4 games, sweeping St. Mary's and splitting with St. Thomas. Horgen had 6 RBI, scored 9 runs, hit a home run, posted 3 doubles and drew three walks.

Pitcher of the Week

St. Olaf's Charlie Brookins (Jr., Pitcher, Cottage Grove, MN) recorded two impressive performances last week, battling St. Thomas' in a tough 2-0 loss, then coming back to throw a no-hitter with one walk against Macalester. For the week, Brookins pitched 13 innings, allowing two runs, nine hits and striking out 11. On the season, Brookins has an ERA of 1.62 in the conference and an OBA of .167. The Ole ace drew praise from Head Coach Matt McDonald for coming back with such an amazing performance following the disappointing loss to St. Thomas. The no-hitter is the first since McDonald as been associated with the program.

April 12, 1999 MIAC Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week

Player of the Week

St. Mary's Scott Morrison (So., C, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall H.S.) batted .538 in the Cardinals' four MIAC games last week, collecting seven hits in 13 at-bats. Among his seven hits were five home runs, including a three-run shot that pulled the Cardinals into a 9-9 tie in the first game of last Saturday's MIAC doubleheader vs. Gustavus, a game the Cardinals won 10-9. Morrison then hit a pair of homers in the second game as SMU completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory. The sophomore catcher also drove in 12 runs last week and scored eight times. He has now hit safely in six straight games and 12 of the Cardinals' 13 games overall. He has also hit at least one home run in the last five games.
 

Pitcher of the Week

Concordia's Doug Muzik (So., Pitcher, Detroit Lakes High School, Detroit Lakes) with a save and a win, was a key to both Cobber wins last week as Concordia (11-12, 2-2) split with both Bethel and Gustavus. Muzik got a save in Wednesday's 22-13 win at Gustavus, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He then pitched a 5 hit complete game shutout on Saturday as the Cobbers stopped Bethel 3-0. He leads the Cobber pitching staff with a 1.78 ERA in 35 innings pitched, including 3 complete games.

Joe Duda - Saint Mary's University
So., DH/Pitcher
Rochester, Minn./Lourdes High School

Joe Duda played in seven of the Cardinals' eight games during their spring trip. As a DH, he hit a team-leading .640, collecting 16 hits in 25 at-bats while also scoring 10 runs. Among his 16 hits were four doubles, two triples and a home run. He also drove in 11 runs, walked three times and was hit by a pitch. In the Cardinals' 14-inning, 6-5 win over Christian Brothers, Duda went 4-for-5 with three doubles, a home run, 5 RBIs and pitched two-thirds of a inning to earn the save.

Pitcher of the Week
Joel Swenson - Saint John's University

Holdingford, Minn./Holdingford High School

Joel Swenson pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout in Saturday, April 3's 3-0 win at Hamline in St. Paul. Swenson struck out eight and onky walked two as he raised his season overall record to 4-1 on the season. SJU is currently 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the MIAC.
