Season Outlook and Notes:
Head coach Jay Schoenebeck welcomes back nine starters on offense and eight starters on defense from a squad that finished 6-4-0 overall and 5-4-0 in the MIAC ]ast year. Offensively, the Gusties will be  led by all-conference quarterback Bob Southworth who completed 200 passes for 2,726 yards and 20 touchdowns. Southworth, who  is on pace to break virtually every Gustavus career passing record. will look to all-conference wide receiver  Chris Swansson who caught 47 balls for 605 yards and 10 td's last season. The offensive line loses only one starter and  looks to be a quality unit. The running game will be led by juniors Travis Prunty and Ryan Britz. Britz is a power back  while Prunty is a finesse back who is an outside threat. Defensively. the line sports two of the best tackles in the  league in seniors Brent Staples (6 3 255) and Nathan Bannick (6-4,263). Staples is a fifth-year player who was runner-up as the  MIAC's Lineman of the Year last year. Defensive coordinator Lance Taylor will need to find a replacement for junior  starting linebacker Jess Benson who decided not to return to school. Sophomore Matt Elfstrom, who missed all of last year  with a knee injury, is a newcomer who looks to be able to help fill in for the loss of Benson. Senior cornerback  Brian Sorum will bolster a solid backfield unit. Special teams will be led by senior kicker Ryan Boutwell, who led Division  Ill in field goals made last season and was a first team All-American.
