Carthage football coach Tim Rucks and the 1998 Redmen opened their season on Saturday, September 12 with a convincing home win over non-conference opponent St. Olaf College, 23-0. The Redmen scored a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, the first one in the air from sophomore quarterback Micah Sheppard to wide receiver Marty Schager for 17 yards at the 9:02 mark. The other came on the ground, on a 27-yard carry by tailback Kevin Burris. Jeff Grybash drilled a 27-yard field goal midway through the second period, and the Redmen took a 17-0 lead into the locker room. Carthage added its final score with 10:46 remaining in the third period on a 21-yard touchdown run by fullback Brian Kec. The defense against the Oles' ground game was really the story, however, as the Redmen defense held St. Olaf to 10 yards rushing and a 113 in the air. Carthage had 208 rushing yards and 87 in the air for a total of 295 yards. The Redmen nipped St. Olaf in time of possession, 31:28 to 28:38. Kevin Burris topped the Carthage ground game with 98 yards on 18 carries. Starting quarterback Micah Sheppard had 52 yards rushing, including a 41-yard gainer in the second quarter that set up the Grybash field goal. Sheppard completed seven-of-12 passes for 77 yards and one touchdown. John Turco and Paul Ferguson also saw action at quarterback. Marty Schager caught five Carthage passes for 57 yards. St. Olaf quarterback Peter Schultz threw 21 times and connected on 10 for 100 yards. John Sedeska had a team-high 11 tackles, including three tackles-for-loss and two sacks.

The Redmen have their hands full next week, traveling to Howards Grove, Wis., to take on Lakeland College (1:30 p.m.). The Muskies, idle on September 12, take a 19-game winning streak, second-best for all four NCAA divisions, into next Saturday's game. Carthage is idle on September 26, and will play host to North Park University on Saturday, October 3 for Homecoming (1 p.m.).
