11/14/98 by Jerry Pyle, Concordia Moorhead SID

The Cobber Season Outlook:
The Running Cobbers, with six experienced returners, three junior college transfers, and a solid freshman class, should be better than last year.

After winning 52 games in the preceding three years (and finishing 2nd, 2nd and 4th in the MIAC), last year's Cobbers went 3-21. Head coach Duane Siverson, beginning his 8th year at the helm, brought in some new blood to make sure that 1997-98 campaign will be seen as just a temporary blip.

Returning Starters

The Cobbers return seven players from last year's squad, six of whom saw extensive playing time. And only one is a senior. Brian Kesselring, a 6-4 forward from Fargo South,  is the top returner, having averaged 12 points in 1997-98,  and over 16 points per game in last year's final 10 games.

Mike Wrobel, a 6-6 sophomore forward from Willmar, averaged 9.3 points and 6.9 rebounds last year and was named to the MIAC's All-Freshman team.

Micah Benson, a 6-1 junior from Moorhead, is the third returning starter. Playing mostly at the point last year, Benson was 6th in the MIAC in assists with 3.7 per game and led the Cobbers in 3-point shooting (27-74, 39.2%).

Off Last Year's Bench

The improvement of last year's backup point guard and the team's best passer, Nick Killoran (So., 6-1, Buffalo, N.D., Maple Valley HS) should let Benson play more at the 2-guard spot this year.

The top front line returner off the last year's bench  is Troy Becker (Jr., 6-5, New York Mills). Becker averaged 3 rebounds, 3.6 points and 15 minute last year. His biggest contribution may be his active defense.

The other front line returner is Nate Malchow (So., 6-8, Aberdeen, S.D.). Malchow was a starter early last year before injuring a knee before Christmas. His defense and rebounding will be a key for the Cobbers' inside game this year.

Three Juco Newcomers

Siverson picked up three juniors who played at regional junior colleges last year. All are expected to contribute. Kermit Cooper, a 6-2 forward from Freeport, Bahamas, starred  on the Devils Lake (N.D.) High School state tournament team in 1995-96. He spent the past two seasons doing the same for Lake Region Junior College in Devils Lake. He makes good decisions. He can rebound and defend. And he may be the Cobbers' most talented player.

After a standout high school career at Grand Forks (N.D.) Central, Joe Ford, a 6-4 guard/forward, was a teammate of Cooper's at Lake Region the past two seasons.  He's expected to bring heady play, good outside shooting and solid rebounding to the Cobber lineup.

Matt Anderson (Jr., Guard, Starbuck) played at Minnewaska High School and then spent the last two years at Ridgewater Community College in Willmar. He gives the Cobbers a third experienced guard (along with Benson and Killoran) and can play either the 1 or 2 spot. He's a strong defender with a good perimeter shot and an ability to get to the lane with the ball.

Others in the Mix:

  On the perimeter:

Greg North (Jr., 6-2 Guard, Mt. Pleasant, Australia, Fertile-Beltrami HS) moved up to from the JV last year and is in the hunt for playing time at a guard spot. Joining him in that hunt are freshman Mark Tuchscherer (6-0, Brainerd H.S.),  and sophomore Garrett  Greterman (6-3, Fargo North).

  Rookies on the front line:

Two of coach Siverson's best recruits, in a good freshman class, are forward Steve Strittmatter (6-4 Oriska, ND,  Maple Valley HS) and post player Jeff  Ubben (6-7, Moorhead HS). Both have the potential to make key contributions this year.

The Outlook:

Coach Siverson wants to return the Cobbers to the up-tempo game that earned them an MIAC playoff spot in 1995 and an NCAA playoff spot in 1996. He may have the horses this year to get back to that style and make a run at the MIAC playoffs.  But standing in the way is the fact that most of last year's best MIAC teams lost little to graduation. Thirteen of last year's 15 all-MIAC players are back.

The Cobbers open the season Nov. 21 when they host Valley City State at 7:30.
