Season Outlook/Notes:
Season Outlook/Notes:
The 1998-99 Gustavus men's basketball team returns four starters and seven of its top eight players off a team that compiled a 26-4 record last season and lost to eventual national champion UW-Platteville, 78-71 in the NCAA West Region Championship game.  The Gusties returning starters include two-time all-region post Luke Schmidt (6'7"), who averaged 20.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, all-conference post and Jostens Division III Player of the Year finalist Marc Newell (6'8"), who averaged 10.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, all-conference guard Bob Southworth (6'2"), who averaged 14.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per game and guard Mark McDonnell (6'3"), who averaged 12.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.  The team will have to replace starting point guard and captain Aaron Grove, who averaged 4.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.  Seniors Joel Stoltenow (3.6 ppg) and Mike Kauls (4.5 ppg) and junior Brent Olson (1.9 ppg) will look to fill the absence of Grove.  Schmidt and Newell form one of the strongest post combinations in Division III.  Schmidt has scored 1615 points through three seasons and very likely will become only the seventh player in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference History to score 2,000 career points.  Newell complements Schmidt with his passing and defensive abilities.  On the perimeter, Southworth and McDonnell both ranked in the top ten in Division III in three-point field goal percentage at one point last season.  Southworth received the AT&T Long Distance Award for December when he shot 70% from three-point range.  Southworth finished the season shooting 46% from three-point range (47/101) and McDonnell shot 47% from three-point range (40/84).  Gustavus has compiled a record of 71-16 overall and 51-9 in the MIAC over the past three seasons.
