Steve Bates, Guard, Jr., 6-2, 200, 10.7 ppg, 5.2 apg, 3.3 rpg, 41% 3pfg. Bates led the MIAC in assists last season. Named to the MIAC All-Conference team. He started all 23 games for the Johnnies last season.

Nathan Guetter, Wing, Sr., 6-4, 220, 14.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.8apg, 51.4 fg, 81.7% ft, 32% 3pfg. Guetter finished eleventh in the MIAC in scoring, tenth in fg%, tenth in rebounding, and eigth in ft%. Guetter was named to the MIAC All-Conference team.

Season Outlook/Notes:

The Saint Johnís Basketball team enters the 1998-99 season returning four starters: junior guard Steve Bates, Cottage Grove/Park HS; senior wing Nathan Guetter, Wabasso; sophomore guard Troy Bigalke, Monticello; and senior post Saul McBroom, Mora.

SJU finished last season with an 11-12 record overall, 10-10 record in the MIAC, which was good enough for a sixth place finish in the MIAC.

Bates was named to the All-MIAC team and also led the MIAC in assists, with 5.45 apg. He also averged 10.7 points per game and led the team in three-point shooting, shooting 41.4 %. Guetter led the Johnnies in scoring, averging 14.45 ppg, good enough for 11th in the MIAC. On his way to being named All-MIAC last season, Guetter finished tenth in fg%, tenth in rebounding, and eigth in ft% in the MIAC.

McBroom was sixth in the MIAC in fg % and will provide an inside presence for the Johnnies. Bugbee and Bigalke were named MIAC-All-Rookie Team and will be looked on to improve on last yearís successful rookie seasons. The Johnnies will once again be coached by Jim Smith. Smith, in his 35th season at SJU has a 535-363 career record, and a 407-213 record in the MIAC. Smith is the sixth winningest coach in NCAA Div. III basketball history. SJU has completed 23 consecutive MIAC seasons without experiencing a losing season.
