Game Recaps

2/10/97 The Cobbers beat St. Mary's at home 74-53 tonight. The win was the team's fifth consecutive, moving them to 16-5 overall and 13-3 in the MIAC. Leah Sonstelie and Mindy Schirm each had 15 points and Ann Mehrkens added 11. (See Forum Story) (See Also Winona Daily News Story)

Next up on the schedule for the Lady Cobbers is a 1:00 Saturday matchup against league-leading St. Thomas at Concordia.

2/8/97 The Cobber won again at St. Olaf this afternoon 80-47. Concordia was led by Leah Sonstelie with 15 points. Mindy Schirm and Ann Mehrkens each added 12 points. All twelve team members scored at least 2 points. Concordfia moved to 12-3 15-5 in the MIAC. St. Olaf fell to 5-10, 10-10. (See Box Score)

2/5/97 Concordia topped Macalester 71-51 tonight in Moorhead to go to 14-5 on the year, 11-3 in the MIAC. Macalester fell to 3-10 in the MIAC, 6-12 overall. Holly Zollar and Leah Sonstelie led the Cobbers with 11 points each. Sara Kragerud added 10 as 11 Cobbers scored. Macalester was led by 13 points from Amy Amundson. (See Box Score)

2/1/97 The Cobber women pulled away from Carleton tonight in Moorhead to earn an 83-56 MIAC basketball win. Concordia is now 10-3 in the MIAC, 13-5 overall. Holly Zollar led the Cobbers with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Leah Sonstelie threw in 14 points and Nikki Vetter chipped in 10 as all twelve Cobbers scored. 2/5/97 The Cobbers women beat Macalester 71-51. Concordia was led by Holly Zollar and Leah Sonstelie with 11 points a piece. Sara Kragerud came off the bench to add ten points. Amy Amundson led the Scots with 13 points. Concordia improved to 14-5 overall, 11-3 in the MIAC.


The Cobbers withstood a late charge by Gustavus to win 66-55 in St. Peter tonight. The win put the Cobbers at 9-3 in the MIAC. Leah Sonstelie led the Cobbers with 16 points. (See Concordian Story)

1/25/97 The Cobber Women lost 69-68 to St. Ben's in Moorhead today to fall to 8-3 in the MIAC. 11-5 overall. The Cobbers led almost the enire way, going into the half ahead 34-30 and were up 65-60 with 2:50 to play.

Blazer Abbey Spoo hit a three pointer to put St. Ben's ahead 67-66 at the 2:00 mark. A St. Ben's layup with 1:22 left by Laura Wendorff put St. Ben's up 69-66. Concordia's Leah Sonstelie hit 2 free throws with :55 left but two more Cobber trips to the offensive end failed to get the Cobbers another point. (See Concordian Story)

1/23/97 Concordia lost at home to Bethel 50-55 to drop them into a tie for second place in the MIAC with Bethel. The Cobbers shot just 17% from the field in the first half and fell behind 30-18 at the break. They mounted a comeback and pulled to within one point under with just under nine minutes left but were never able to grab the lead. Concordia was led by Holly Zollar with 15 points and eight rebounds. Bethel was led by Beth Johnson's 16 points and Tara Dutton's 16 rebounds.

1/18/97 Concordia beat Hamline 72-59 at home tonight to go to 8-1 in the MIAC, 11-3 overall. Four Cobbers scored in double digits with Holly Zollar pacing the squad with 18. Ann Mehrkens added 16, Nikki Vetter scored 11 and Leah Sonstelie chipped in 10. Hamline was led by Deb Van Schooten with 22 points and 18 rebounds.

1/18/97 Concordia won 81-54 at Augsburg tonight to move to 7-1 in the MIAC, 10-3 overall. Concordia got 17 points and 13 rebounds from Ann Mehrkens . Leah Sonstelie added 14 points. Holly Zollar had 11 and Steffi Backer had 10. The Cobbers host Hamline Monday, Jan. 20 at 6:00 in a makeup of last week's game that was postponed due to poor weather.

1/13/97 Concordia suffered its first MIAC loss of the season tonight, falling 73-44 at St. Thomas.   See Concordian Story

1/8/97 The Cobbers defeated St. Olaf 68-53 tonight to go to 6-0 in the MIAC. Leah Sonstelie knotched a double-double by scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Holly Zollar added 14 points and 7 rebounds. Ann Mehrkens had 10 rebounds to go with 9 points. St. Olaf was led by Natalie Siefer with 17 points and 10 rebounds. (See Concordian Article)

1/6/97 The Cobbers beat Macalester in St. Paul 67-53.

1/4/97 The Cobbers beat St. Mary's 77-47 today in Winona to go 4-0 in the MIAC. Leah Sonstelie led the Cobbers with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Mindy Schirm added 14 points and Ann Mehrkens 12. (See Story in Winonanet)

12/14/96: The Cobbers beat Carleton 72-39 in Northfield tonight. Steffi Backer led the Cobbers in scoring with 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting, 2-2 from 3 point range. Holly Zollar added 13 points and 6 rebounds. The Cobbers held Carleton to just 22% shooting from the field while themselves shooting better than 50%.

12/11/96: The Cobbers defeated Gustavus 71-53 in their first home MIAC
game of the season. Holly Zollar led the Cobbers with 15
points, Ann Mehrkens and Leah Sonstelie added 14 a piece,
while Mindy Shirm poured in 13. Mehrkens led Concordia with
9 rebounds. Gustavus was led by Katie Hansen with 22 points.

12/7/96 Concordia beat St. Ben's in St. Joseph today 66-49 to win their MIAC opener and move to 4-2 on the year. The Cobbers got 19 points from Leah Sonstelie and 14 from Mindy Shirm. Concordia led 38-24 at the half.


The Cobbers beat Mayville State tonight 63-60. Holly Zollar had 17 for Concordia. The Cobbers, 3-2 on the year, open their MIAC season at St. Ben's Saturday, Dec. 7, at 3:00


Cobbers beat UM-Crookston in Crookston tonight 75-67. Ann Mehrkens had 16 for Concordia and Holly Zollar added 13.

11/26/96 Cobbers Take Second at Trinity, Texas, Tournament. Lose to Moorhead State 57-59 at home.

Concordia got 25 points from junior post Leah Sonstelie in Saturday's 66-64 win over Roanoke College but then fell 66-56 to UC-San Diego in Sunday's Championship game at the Trinity University Tournament in San Antonio.

The Cobbers hosted cross-town rival Moorhead State on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The Cobbers lost 57-59. Tonah Paulson made a lay-up with just 2 seconds in regulation to take the lead. Steffi Backer last second 3 point attempt missed.

Concordia was led in scoring and rebounds by Leah Sonstelie with 16 points and 9 boards. Holly Zollar also had 9 rebounds. Mindy Schirm added 9 points for the home team.
