Women's basketball team plays in NCAA regional tournament
Although four all-America members of the 1981-82 Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Division III championship Cobber basketball team were lost to graduation, hopes remained high for another successful season.
The depth from last year's team carried through to the 1982-83 schedule and resulted in a share of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, with an 8-1 won-lost conference record and 15-8 overall. The College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., and St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., also had 8-1 records.
Concordia was selected as the site for the Minnesota AIAW Division II and Division III tournament Feb. 24-26, which would decide the state championship. After winning in the first round, the Cobbers faced St. Thomas in the semifinals and lost 70-64. St. Thomas went on to take the state title, followed by The University of MinnesotaMorris in second place and Concordia in third.
Because of their third-place finish, the Cobber women did not expect to continue in postseason play. However, Concordia was invited to host and play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III West Region tournament, March 4-5.
In the NCAA tournament, Concordia was selected ahead of St. Thomas because of the Cobbers' tougher schedule, their three regular-season victories over St. Thomas, their better record against Division III teams and their reputation as last year's AIAW national champions. The University of Minnesota-Morris, nationally ranked 20th, was also chosen to compete in the four-team tourney.
Concordia's first opponent was Pomona-Pitzer College of Claremont, Calif., who was tied with Morris in the 20th ranked position. In a show of fine offensive and defensive strength, the Cobbers led the entire game and won 75-60.
The next round was an all Minnesota duel with Concordia facing Morris. Although they led most of the game, the Cobbers were beaten by a Morris basket with just 17 seconds left, which made the final score 69-68 and ended the women's season.
JoDee Bock, a 6'l" sophomore from Lisbon, N.D., led the Cobbers in offense throughout the season and broke the school single-game scoring record by hitting 37 points against Valley City (N.D.) State College, Jan. 17.
Five-foot-nine senior Mary Moenkedick from Perham, Minn., rounded
out a successful collegiate basketball career, falling just five points
short of 1,000 for her four-year regular season point total.
