The Lady Cobber basketball team won its fourth MIAC title in five years by posting a 19-1 conference record, capturing the title on the last day of the regular season with a 75-73 win at St. Ben's. This young team, led by its lone senior, point guard Becky Ehnert, New York Mills, Minn., then went on to capture its third National Collegiate Athletic Association West Region title in four years with a thrilling 81-77 overtime victory over MIAC runner-up St. Thomas in the Cobber gym.
The West Region championship put the Lady Cobbers in the nation's top eight Division III schools. But a 70-65 road loss in the NCAA's quarterfinal game to Centre College of Danville, Ky., ended Concordia's 24-5 season.
In Ehnert's four-year career her Lady Cobber teams compiled a record of 103 wins and 15 losses. She dished Out 598 career assists, the second highest total in Cobber history.
Coach Duane Siverson, 144-30 in his six years as head coach, will have a lot of talent returning next year. This season's top four scorers will be back, including junior all- American Michelle Thykeson, Finley, N.D. (17.8 points per game), who was also named Kodak all-American as one of the 10 best players in Division III; sophomore Cathy Johnson, Milbank, S.D. (11.4 ppg); junior Rhonda Schneekloth, Tower City, N.D. (10.2 ppg); and junior Kim Fierke, Mountain Iron, Minn. (8.6 ppg).
Thykeson, named the MIAC's Most Valuable Player, was joined by Ehnert
and Johnson on the coaches' all-MIAC team. SchneeIdoth and Fierke received
honorable mention in all-conference voting, and Fierke, a business administration
major, also earned academic all-MIAC honors.
