Press Release:
Concordia-Moorhead Will Begin Women's Ice Hockey Program
Concordia is seeking to hire a head coach in the early fall of 1998 to begin recruiting for the 1999-2000 season. That head coach will also serve as coach of Concordia's women's club hockey team, which began competition in the fall of 1997.
Concordia is one of eight schools schools in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) to announce the formation of an intercollegiate women's hockey program. Concordia is receiving some financial support for the women's hockey program through a grant from the U.S. Olympic Committee. The MIAC received the $440,000 grant in 1997 to help encourage the formation of women's intercollegiate hockey teams.
Dr. Pipho stated in his announcement, "Concordia is delighted to be able to offer this additional athletic opportunity for our women student athletes. This decision was made easier by the increasing participation of high school girls in competitive hockey, the high number of MIAC schools already committed to sponsoring women's hockey and the grant from the U.S. Olympic Committee."
Like Concordia's men's program, the Cobber women's hockey team is expected to practice and play its home games at the Moorhead Sports Center.
