Augsburg crowned eight champs and rolled up 140 points to top runner-up St.
John's (98) by 42 points and win its 12th consecutive MIAC team title today at
the University of St. Thomas. St. Olaf (62), St. Thomas (34.5), Concordia (22.5)
and Carleton (13) rounded out the scoring.

The 10 winners and 12 wild cards advance to the NCAA tourney. The wild-card
meeting began at 4:30 p.m.

Heavyweight John Pena and Wade Johnson (150) won their third consecutive titles
for the Auggies, and Henry Gerten (118) and Jamie Larkin (134) were repeat
champs. Larkin edged Concordia's Shawn Nicholas 1-0.

St. John's had two champs -- repeat champ John Newman (167) and Brandon Novak
(190). Newman was voted the meet's Outstanding Wrestler as he pinned Ausgburg's
Jim Petersonin 2:37 in battle of All-Americans. Peterson, who had beaten
defending 177-pound champ Nathan Reiff of Concordia in the semifinals 7-0, led
2-1 as was in a stalemate situation with Newman before the SJU junior rolled him
for a quick fall. Newman is just 5-0 on the season as he's been injured much of
the year. Novak edged Augsburg's Shane Wevley 8-6.

Top-seeded wrestlers won in nine of the 10 weight classes. The exception came at
177 where Augsburg freshman Nik Lewandowski scored a 3-1 sudden-death win over
SJU's Andy Lien.

Other champs were Augsburg's Brian Jones (126), Josh Cagle (142) and Jesse
Bakalyar (158).

MIAC Wrestling Saturday at St. Thomas

Augsburg is a heavy favorite to win the 1998 MIAC Wrestling Championships to be
held Saturday at the University of St. Thomas. The Auggies, who won nationals in
1997 and are ranked No. 1 again in NCAA Division III this season, have won the
MIAC team title the last 11 years and 21 of the last 23 seasons. Augsburg has
four returning champions and six returning All-Americans. The Auggies dominated
the MIAC Duals tournament last month, winning 49 of the 50 matches they
contested (including several forfeits).

The six-team competition starts at 10 a.m. in Schoenecker Arena. All-day tickets
are $4 for adults and $2 for students. The meet also serves as the qualifier for
the March 6-7 NCAA Division III Championships, to be held in Waterloo, Ia. The
10 weight-class champions and 12 other wild-card picks will advance to
nationals.

Returning champions are Concordia's Nathan Reiff (177) (He'll be at 167 this year) and Augsburg's Henry  Gerten (118), Jamie Larkin (134), Wade Johnson (142) and John Pena (Hwt). Pena,
Johnson and Gerten also won MIAC championships in 1996.
