MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (3/31/10)-- It wasn't the upset victory they were looking for, but Concordia was able to come away with a "feel good" loss against NCAA Division I opponent the University of Minnesota on Wednesday in the Metrodome.

The Cobbers gave up a pair of runs to the Gophers in the sixth inning, which broke open a 2-2 tie, and ended up losing 4-2. Both teams had seven hits in the game as Concordia squared off against a Division I opponent for the third straight season.

Concordia grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and then regained a 2-1 lead in the fourth before giving up a single score in the fifth and two more in the sixth to close out the scoring. The loss is the fifth straight at the hands of the Gophers for Concordia and drops their overall season record to 7-6. Minnesota is now 9-16 on the year.

The Cobbers got on the board in the first inning when Dan Wackler hit a double to left field and then scored on a two-out single by Nick Lewis. For Lewis it would be the first of his three hits and two RBI on the night.

After conceding a run in the bottom of the second, Concordia took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth when Lewis doubled home Wackler from second. The pivotal part of the game came in the reamaining half inning. With runners on second and third and no outs, the Cobbers failed to score another run after a ground out to third base and then an inning-ending double play killed the Concordia rally after Adam Johnson was hit by a pitch.

The Gophers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on an unearned run after a steal of second. Minnesota then claimed the win by getting two runs in the sixth on three hits and a sacrifice fly.

Besides Lewis, the Cobber hits came from Wackler, Jake Krause, Michael Carlson and Jordan Doschadis who all had one base knock. Doschadis' hit was the most memorable as it was his first collegiate hit. Carlson was 1-for-2 in the game and now leads the team in hitting with a .389 average. Krause kept the team's stolen base streak intact. He stole a base on a pitch out in the fifth inning and is now 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts this season. As a team the Cobbers have swiped at least one base in each of their first 13 games of the year and have 36 steals on the year.

Concordia used six pitchers in the game to keep the Minnesota offense in check. The Cobber pitchers allowed only seven hits and three earned runs to a team that was hitting .283 coming into the contest.

Chris Fellows started the game and pitched the first 2.0 innings. He gave up one hit and struck out one. Unfortunately his lone hit was a solo home run in the second inning. Johnson pitched the third and fourth innings, did not allow a run and gave up two hits. Jake Torrison then entered in the fifth inning and gave up an unearned run. For Torrison it was his seventh unearned run of the year. He has yet to give up an earned run and has a season ERA of 0.00. Zach Frappier was saddled with the loss after giving up the two runs in the sixth inning. Andrew Skow-Anderson and Ryan Johnson finished off the game for the CC staff. Skow-Anderson gave up one hit in the seventh and Cobber closer Ryan Johnson did not allow a base hit and struck out one in the eighth.

The Gophers were led by Nick O'Shea who hit the solo shot in the second and went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Scott Fern picked up his second win of the year by pitching three scoreless innings in the middle of the game. Scott Matyas came on to record his third save of the year by getting the final three outs of the game.

Concordia will open MIAC play on Saturday when they host Hamline at 1 p.m. at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
