MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/03/10)-- It was about as perfect as a day could get for Concordia on Saturday. Hosting their home opener with temperatures around 60 degrees and under sunny skies, the Cobbers opened the MIAC season by beating Hamline 9-4 and 16-5. Concordia scored 25 runs, hit five home runs and pounded out 32 hits as they swept Pipers for the first time since the 2005 season.

The two wins push Concordia's overall record to 9-6. The Pipers fall to 5-14 and have now lost five of their last six games.

The victories also move Cobber head coach Bucky Burgau
closer to the 600 career win total. Burgau now has 597 career wins and needs only three more to become the
20th active DIII coach to reach 600 wins and the 32nd in the history of DIII baseball.

The Cobber offense was fueled by the top four hitters in the order. Jake Krause, Dan Wackler, Michael Carlson and Nick Lewis combined for 19 hits, drove in 11 runs and hit all four homers. Krause went 5-for-9 with five RBI and hit both home runs in the second game. Wackler was 7-for-9 on the day and was a perfect 5-for-5 in the finale. Carlson went 3-for-8 in the two games and had three RBI while Lewis hit both long balls in the opener and was 4-for-9 with six runs scored.

The other offensive highlight of the day was provided by junior Derek Neu. Neu pinch hit in the sixth inning of the second game and hit a towering home run over the left field fence. It was Neu's first collegiate hit and first career home run.

Chris Fellows and Zach Frappier earned the wins for Concordia. Fellows started the first game, pitched 5.0 innings and allowed three earned runs. He also struck out four. Adam Johnson replaced Fellows in the sixth and finished Game 1 with two scoreless innings. Frappier came into the game in the fourth inning in the nightcap and allowed one earned run in 2.1 innings. Eddie Massee started the second game and pitched out of a pair of jams early in the game to keep Concordia close. Massee gave up three earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched. Ryan Johnson finished off the doubleheader by not giving up a hit in the final inning of play.

Hamline was led by J.D. Modrynski who was 3-for-6 in the doubleheader. Cory Miller went 2-for-3 in the second game and had two RBI. The Pipers used nine pitchers in the second game and 11 total for the two games.

Next up for Concordia is a single game at UM-Morris on Monday, Apr. 5 at 3 p.m.
