MAYVILLE, N.D. (4/08/10)-- In the end it wasn't the historic win they were looking for, but it might have been another character building moment that will help Concordia down the road.

The Cobbers scored three runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning against Mayville State to tie the game at 5-5 but then lost the non-conference tilt on a two-out fielder's choice play in the bottom of the 10th. The 6-5 loss ends Concordia's four-game winning streak and drops the Cobbers to 11-7 on the season.

Concordia entered the game with a chance to give head coach Bucky Burgau his 600th career win in maroon and gold. Coming off a couple of blowout wins, the Cobbers showed their mettle in a tight contest that stayed close throughout the entire nine innings. CC was also able to play 24 of the 26 players they took on the trip to Mayville as they try and get more game-style repetitions in preparation for the meat of the MIAC season.

Concordia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Adam Johnson scored on sacrifice fly off the bat of Josh Hintz. Cobber starting pitcher Andrew Skow-Anderson would make that one run hold up for his entire six-inning stint. Skow-Anderson threw the first six innings and allowed only four hits. He retired seven of the last eight batters he faced and did not allow a base runner to get past second base.

Mayville State (12-13) finally got on the board in the seventh when they scored four runs on five hits. That frame allowed the Comets to take a 4-2 lead. Mayville then tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.

That set up the dramatics for Concordia in the ninth. Dan Wackler walked with one out and then Michael Carlson flew out to center for the second out and put CC's hopes on life support. Four walks and a hit later and the Cobbers had tied the game at 5-5. Adam Johnson singled to load the bases after an Alex Jungels pinch-hit walk and then three straight free passes gave Concordia new life. The Cobbers almost took a commanding lead after the game was tied, but Erik Stoa's tailing line drive was caught by the Comet left fielder as he came up with a stellar athletic catch that proved to be the defensive play of the game.

After a scoreless bottom of the inning and then no runs in the top of the 10th, Mayville won the game after the leadoff man singled and then took second base on a catcher's interference call which put runners at first and second with one out. On the very next at-bat, the Comet hitter grounded to short and CC was able to come up with the force play at second. The alert Mayville base runner that started at second was able to come all the way home and beat the throw to score the game-winning run.

Concordia was outhit 11-9 in the game. A pair of Cobber hitters had more than one hit in the contest. Wackler was 2-for-5 and extended his hitting streak to seven games and Tony Emmerich was 2-for-4. Wackler is now 13-for-20 (.650) in the last four games.

On the mound, Concordia used five pitchers with four finishing off the final 3.2 innings. Ryan Johnson continued his torrid stretch. He pitched one inning and did not allow an earned run. He lowered his ERA to 1.17 on the year and has not allowed an earned run in the last 11.0 innings of work.

Clem Dupuis pitched the final 1.2 innings and was saddled with the loss but was not credited with an earned run.

The Cobbers will return to MIAC play when they square off against Augsburg in Minneapolis on Saturday, Apr. 10 at 1 p.m.
