MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (4/10/10)-- It was another perfect Saturday for Concordia. For the second straight weekend the Cobbers swept a conference opponent and kept their perfect MIAC record intact. Concordia received just enough offense and once again had stellar pitching as they beat Augsburg 6-4 and 2-1 in Minneapolis.

What made the day even more special was the fact that in the win in the first game gave Cobber head coach Bucky Burgau his 600th career victory in maroon and gold. With the win Burgau became the 20th active DIII coach to reach 600 wins and the 32nd in the history of DIII baseball to reach that mark. He is now 600-470-6 overall and 365-232 in conference play. The 365 league wins represents the most by any coach in the history of MIAC baseball.

The two wins push Concordia's record to 13-7 overall but more importantly, CC is now 4-0 in the MIAC and the only team left in the conference that has yet to lose a game. It is also the first time that the Cobbers have started the MIAC season 4-0 since the 1993 season when they began the conference season 5-0.

Both games went down to the wire with the Cobbers coming up with the clutch hits and timely pitching to come away with the two wins. In the opener, Concordia scored twice in the first and then once more in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Augsburg then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when they scored three runs on four hits. CC then retook the lead in the fifth when Nate Haase's ground ball scored Michael Carlson from third base. The Auggies then climbed even with CC for a second time when they added a single run in the sixth.

That set the stage for Adam Johnson's heroics. Johnson relieved CC starter Chris Fellows after Augsburg had tied the game. He then slammed the door shut on the Auggie offense by pitching two innings without allowing a hit. Johnson then stepped to the plate in the top of the seventh with two outs and sent a shot over the left-center field fence that also scored Carlson.

For Johnson it was his second home run of the season and first win of the year.

In the second game, the Cobbers once again got on the board in the first inning. Nick Lewis singled home Dan Wackler after Wackler led off the game with a single up the middle and then stole second base. Concordia then pushed the lead to 2-0 in the third frame when Wackler scored from third after Carlson got caught in a run down between first and second as he tried to steal.

The rest of the nightcap was left up to starting pitcher Eddie Massee and Cobber closer Ryan Johnson. Massee baffled the Auggies for six innings. He allowed just one run, which came in the sixth inning, and only gave up five hits. Only one runner advanced past second base in the first five innings. Massee then gave way to Ryan Johnson in the seventh inning and Johnson pitched out of a first and second jam with only one out by getting the final Auggie batter to ground into a double play. For Johnson it was his fourth save of the year.

The top of the order once again provided the majority of the offense for Concordia. The top four hitters in the order combined for 11 of the team's 17 hits on the day.

Wackler moved into the leadoff spot after an injury to Jake Krause and proceeded to go 3-for-6 on the day with four runs scored and an RBI. He has now hit safely in nine straight games and upped his team-leading batting average to .438. Lewis also pushed his hitting streak to nine games. He was 3-for-6 as well and drove in a pair of runs. Haase went 3-for-3 in the second game and is now hitting .381. Carlson had a hit in each game and has now hit safely in the last eight games.

Augsburg (11-13/4-2 MIAC), which entered the day unbeaten in MIAC, play was led by Joe Pierce who went 3-for-5 on the day and extended his hitting streak to 22 games.

Concordia will face another tough road match-up when they play at St. John's on Tuesday, Apr. 12 at 2:30 p.m. The Johnnies are 5-1 in the MIAC and are currently tied for second place.
