ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/01/10)-- The 10 Concordia seniors are leading by example in 2010. It seems like every time in every critical conference doubleheader the Cobbers have one senior who steps up and provides a game-changing performance. On Saturday against No.5-ranked St. Thomas it was starting pitcher Eddie Massee. After Concordia lost the opener against the Tommies 12-0, Massee stepped to the mound and pitched a complete-game, seven-hitter to push the Cobbers to a 5-1 win and a huge split. With the split, Concordia and St. Thomas stay atop the MIAC standings with identical 11-5 records. The Cobbers have four games remaining in the conference schedule and all four are at home. CC is now 20-13 overall and posts their first 20-win season since 2006. The Tommies also have four games left in the MIAC schedule with a pair at home against Hamline and then two at third-place St. Olaf to end the regular season next Saturday. The first game was decided by a hefty 20-30 mph wind blowing out to right field. The Tommies with their multiple left-handed hitters took advantage of the helping wind while the Cobbers, with only one lefty, did not. St. Thomas hit three long balls over the right field fence and blew open a 3-0 game with three runs in the fifth inning and then six more in the bottom of the sixth. Concordia had chances in the third and sixth innings with multiple runners on base and only one out but couldn't come up with the clutch hit and were held scoreless for only the second times this season. Cobber starter Chris Fellows stymied the UST offense for the first four innings but then fell off his pace when he allowed a three-run homer in the fifth. Fellows gave up six earned runs and was saddled with his first loss of the year. Concordia only had three hits in the opener and two came from the bat of Nate Haase. Haase was 2-for-3 in the game against Tommie All-American pitcher Matt Schuld. The biggest offensive news in the opener came from Nick Lewis who went 0-for-2 and had his 20-game hitting streak come to an end. Lewis ended up tying Kyle Johnson for the all-time consecutive game hit streak at 20. The second game was all Massee and three solo home runs for the Cobbers. Massee started the game by beaning the first two batters. He then pitched out of the situation by getting a pickoff and a pair of ground outs. Massee would also pitch out of jams in the second, fourth and fifth innings and was helped out by a defense that threw a runner out at the plate in the fourth frame. Offensively, the Cobbers got solo shots from Jake Krause, Adam Johnson and Josh Dahlke. Krause hit his fifth homer of the year in the second and Johnson matched him with his fifth of the year in the sixth inning. Dahlke returned to the CC lineup after missing a pair of games and hit his third long ball of the year in the second inning. Krause finished the game by going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Concordia had nine hits in the finale and were bolstered by the return of Dahlke and second baseman Dan Wackler. Wackler was 2-for-4 in the second game and had an RBI, a run scored and a double. Lewis rebounded from the hitless first game and went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the nightcap. The Cobbers will play at NDSU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the season. CC will then host St. Mary's on Wednesday, May 5 at 1 p.m.finish the MIAC regular season by hosting Bethel on Saturday, May 8 at 1 p.m. If Concordia wins all four league games they will earn at least a share of the conference championship. It would be their first MIAC title since 1995.
