Doubleheader Recap: MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (4/18/10)-- Concordia was finally able to stay away from conceding a big inning and was rewarded with their first victory in the last eight games. The Cobbers rode the arm of freshman pitcher Joelle Link and posted a 4-1 win over Augsburg in the second game of their doubleheader in Minneapolis on Sunday. The Auggies took the opener 8-6 which extended Concordia's losing streak to seven games. During their seven-game losing streak, the Cobbers gave up runs in 21 different innings. Of those 21 innings, CC conceded multiple runs on 15 different occasions. Concordia's ability to limit Augsburg to just a single run broke the string of seven games of giving up at least two runs in at least one inning. Link was the key to the victory for Concordia. She pitched the first 6.0 innings and did not allow a run. She scattered five hits and only walked one. Link retired nine of the final 12 batters she faced. She was able to get her confidence going after pitching out of a jam in the first inning and then retired five straight before giving up a two-out single in the third. Concordia (6-23/3-9) scored in three different innings in the nightcap. They plated single runs in the second and third frames and then added two more in the fourth. For the game, the Cobbers outhit Augsburg 8-6. The big blow of the second game came off the bat of Nikki Clouse who lined a triple to right center that scored the two runs in the fourth. For Clouse it was her fist collegiate triple and second hit of the game. In the first game, Concordia almost erased the 5-0 deficit after the first inning. The Cobbers got to within 5-4 in the fourth inning but then allowed a single run in the bottom of the fourth and then two more in the fifth. CC mounted one more rally in the seventh inning. They were able to score two runs to get to within two at 8-6 with the tying runner on second with only one out. Unfortunately the final two Cobber hitters never got the ball out of the infield and CC lost 8-6. Senior third baseman Maddie Haroldson had two hits in each game and has now hit safely in eight of the last 10 games. She also upped her team-leading batting average to .429. Kesley Jones had at least one hit in both games. She was 3-for-3 in the win in the second game and added a single base knock in the opener. Link was the only other CC player with a multiple-hit game on the day. She went 2-for-3 in the first game. Concordia will return home to host Macalester on Tuesday, Apr. 20 at 4 p.m.
