FARGO, N.D. (2/1/08)-- February came in like a warm and fuzzy teddy bear for Concordia as they beat cross-town rival MSU Moorhead 6-3 on the first of the month in Fargo. The win snaps a five-match losing skid against the Dragons. The last time CC beat MSU M was in 2002. The win also avenges a pair of 8-1 losses at the hands of the Dragons last season.
The victory evens Concordia's dual match record at 1-1 for the season. The one win matches the team's total win production from last year. The match was the season opener for MSU Moorhead who falls to 0-1 on the year.
The match didn't start out as planned for the Cobbers. CC put themselves behind the eight ball as they lost two of the three doubles matches. However, their stellar singles play saved the match. Concordia then rallied to win five of the six singles matches.
The No.1 doubles team of Ashley Leister and Lyndsi Tufte claimed the only win of the doubles competition for CC. They scored an 8-3 win to even their season record at 1-1.
In singles play, sophomore Amy Freeman and freshman Melanie Gail remained perfect for the season. Freeman won her match at No.4 singles 6-3, 6-4 and has not lost a set this year. Gail turned the tables from her match on Saturday where she had to go to the super-set to claim the win. On Friday, she cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
Leister and Tufte backed up their doubles win by recording victories in singles. Leister won the top singles event 7-5, 6-3 and Tufte won her No.3 singles match 6-3, 6-2.
Junior Mollie Miller got on the winning track in 2008. She posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at No.2 singles to even her season total at 1-1.
Concordia will take to the road for a pair of matches on Super Bowl Sunday. The Cobbers will play St. Scholastica and St. Cloud State at Gold's Gym in Sartell on Feb. 3.
