Gameday Recap:

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/24/09)-- It had been 11 years to the date since Concordia had last beaten MSU Moorhead. The Cobbers used a tough defense and some timely scoring on the offensive side to break a nine-game losing streak against the Dragons and post a 54-53 in Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse on Tuesday. CC junior John Fraase hit the game-winning jumper with :17 seconds to play to end the 11-year drought and give Concordia the one-point lead.

The win keeps the Cobbers unbeaten on the season as they move to 3-0. It is the first time since the 2003-04 campaign that Concordia has won three straight to start the season. MSU Moorhead loses for the third straight time after winning their season opener and drops to 1-3 on the year.

The game was far from a shooter's highlight reel as neither team shot above 40.0% for any half. The Cobbers shot an identical 39.1% (9-for-23) from the floor in each period while the Dragons shot 25.8% (8-for-31) in the first half and 35.0% (7-for-20) in the final period.

The scoring ticker in the game reflected the defensive intensity and tepid offensive shooting. The score was tied four times in the first half and neither team had more than a four-point lead until Darrin Olmscheid's jumper with 2:19 left to play in the opening period gave CC a six-point margin at 22-16. A 3-point basket at the buzzer for MSU M cut Concordia's lead to 25-22 at the break.

The Cobbers threatened to run away from the Dragons in the first part of the second half but MSU M was able to reel Concordia in with 7:33 to play in the game. CC built a nine-point lead with 12:00 remaining but then the Dragons went on an 11-2 run over the next 4:27 to even the score at 39-39. Over the final 7:00 of play, the game would be tied five times and the lead would change hands eight times. The final lead change came after Dragon guard Jake Driscoll hit a pair of free throws with :29 seconds to play to give MSU M a 53-52 lead. On the next possession, Concordia was able to push the ball into Fraase at the right elbow. Fraase was then able to drive his defender back and hit a jumper with :17 seconds left to give CC the 54-53 lead. The Dragons' had a jump ball call in their final possession to give the Cobbers the ball and the win.

Fraase finished the game with a team-high 14 points to go along with 11 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season. Olmscheid had 12 points and Eric Hartmann added 10 to give CC a trio of double-digit scorers. Junior guard Karl Olson had five points, four rebounds and three assists.

Concordia will travel to Iowa to play Central on Saturday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m.
