PELLA, Iowa (11/28/09)-- Call it a turkey hangover or lasting effects from the tryptophan as the Cobbers sleepwalked their way through the first 13 minutes of their game against Central (Iowa) on Saturday and lost 85-64. The loss is the first of the season for CC and snaps a six-game winning streak that dated back to the end of last season.
Central (4-1) took full advantage of Concorda's early-game sluggishness by bolting to a 16-2 lead and then extending it to 20 points at 32-12 with 7:26 to play in the first period. From there, the Dutch were content to trade baskets with the Cobbers and maintain their double-digit lead. Central led by 20 at the break and allowed Concordia to cut the lead to 12 at 55-43 with 12:46 to play but then went on a 12-4 run to break the Cobber momentum.
Concordia junior John Fraase was the only CC player with more than nine points in the game. He scored 21 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds to post his second consecutive double-double. He also had four assists and two steals. Karl Olson added nine points, four assists and three steals.
Concordia shot a respectable 41.2% (21-for-51) from the floor and connected on 30.8% (4-for-13) of their attempts from behind the arc. Central was 28-for-53 (52.8%) from the field and 4-for-12 (33.3%) from 3-point range. Although the Dutch only held a 37-30 advantage in rebounds, they enjoyed a sizable 36-18 margin in points in the paint. The Cobbers only had one less turnover in the game (21-20) but Central was able to turn CC's 21 miscues into a 26-11 edge in points off of turnovers.
Concordia will open MIAC play on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 9 p.m. against nationally-ranked St. Thomas. The game will be played at Concordia-St. Paul due to construction on the St. Thomas campus.
