Cobbers Settle For Tie With Oles | ||||||||||||||||||
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (11/20/09)-- Concordia gave up the game-tying goal with under two minutes to play in regulation and then skated to a scoreless overtime period and had to settle for a 3-3 tie with St. Olaf in Northfield on Friday. The Cobbers (1-5-1/1-1-1 MIAC) took a 3-2 lead with 4:50 to play in the third period when Jared Collen connected on his third goal of the season. CC then gave up five shots on goal in the next three minutes of play before the Oles tied the game with 1:43 remaining in the final frame. Concordia dominated the extra session as they put up four shots on goal and did not allow St. Olaf a single shot in the five-minute overtime period. St. Olaf (3-2-2/0-1-2 MIAC) got on the board first as they netted the only goal of the first 20 minutes of play. The Cobbers finally got on the board in the second period when Aaron Wheeler scored his first collegiate goal at the 2:42 mark. Captain Shawn Goos was credited with the assist on the play. Concordia then took their first lead of the game three minutes later on a goal by Marc Harrie. It was Harrie's second goal of the year and Nick Thielen and Pat Deitz were given the assists. The Oles tied the game at the back end of the second period. The game stayed deadlocked at 2-2 when Collen scored at 15:10 on assists from Erick Galt and Ben Payne. Neither team could do anything on the power play in the game. The Cobbers were 0-for-5 on the power play while the Oles went 0-for-2. Concordia also conceded a shorthanded goal in the second period. It was CC's third shorthanded goal allowed on the year. St. Olaf outshot Concordia 39-35 for the game. The teams were almost even in shots in the first two periods before the Oles outshot CC 18-8 in the third frame as the Cobbers tried to hang on to the one-goal lead. Cobber goalie Jacob Vatnsdal made 36 saves while Ole netminder Ben Leis stopped 32 shots. The two teams will finish off their two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
