MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (2/19/10)-- Concordia completed their best MIAC Conference Meet in five years by finishing with a final team total of 254 points and placing seventh. It is the most team points at a conference meet for the Cobbers since the 2000-01 season and the highest team finish since the 2004-05 campaign.
To go with their team highlights from the meet, junior diver Amy Glubzinski finished third in the 1-meter competition one day after winning the 3-meter even and was named the MIAC Women's Diver of the Year. She follows in the footsteps of national champion Annie Cullen who earned the award back in 2006.
It was another day for school records and diving prowess for Concordia. Junior Aleina Weisz broke her second school record of the meet. Not to be outdone by Weisz, Katie Coleman broke the school record in the 1650-yard freestyle to put a cherry on the top of her outstanding meet. Glubzinski helped give CC another pair of top 3 finishes in a diving event as she teamed with Lauren Trudeau to finish second and third in the 1-meter event.
The Cobbers then capped the meet by breaking the program record in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Weisz, who broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke on Friday, swam a 2:15.81 in the prelims of the 200-yard backstroke and bettered her own program record by almost five full seconds. Weisz added a 16th-place finish in the finals to go with her 12-th place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
Coleman saved her best for last as she tore up the longest swimming event of the meet and finished eighth in the 1650-yard freestyle. She recorded a time of 18:01.95 which broke the old school record of 18:06.99 set back in 2001. Coleman had the biggest impact on the team point total by recording three top 15 finishes in the meet.
Trudeau and Glubzinski narrowly missed having back-to-back 1-2 finishes in a diving event. In the 1-meter, Trudeau finished second with a final total of 405.80 and Glubzinski was third at 366.00. The bad news for Trudeau was that her total was only 1.30 points from the winning score. The good news was that her final score was a national provisional qualifying mark and she has now qualified on three different occasions and should be a shoe-in to get invited to the NCAA National Meet.
In the final event of the meet, the 400-freestyle quartet of Coleman, Sarah Ament, Weisz and Amanda Suchanek clocked a time of 3:44.19, broke another school record and finished eighth. The relay team broke the old record of 3:45.82 set at the 2008 conference meet.
