STEVENS POINT, Wis. (11/20/09)-- Concordia turned a 13-point halftime lead into a 39-point rout in the second half of their season-opening win over St. Scholastica on Friday. The Cobbers' 90-51 victory is the largest season-opening win in program history. The 39-point margin of victory in the opener breaks the old mark of 37 points set back in 1993-94 when CC beat Pomona Pitzer 86-49 in the opener.

The game started out slowly for Concordia as they gave up the first five points and trailed 5-0 after 2:30 of the first half. The Cobbers didn't get their first field goal of the game until the 16:14 mark of the opening period when senior Sara Sorbo connected on a layup. From there, the Cobbers would go on a 14-2 run and never look back. CC led 20-7 with just under 11 minutes to play in the half and then the two teams traded runs until the end of the period and Concordia held on to their 13-point margin at 36-23

The second half was all Cobbers as they shot 67.9% from the floor and 50.0% from 3-point range and scored 54 points. Concordia quietly eased the 13-point lead to a 22-point margin midway through the half and then got as far away as 42 before ending with the 90-51 win.

Concordia shot 50.8% (32-for-63) for the game from the floor and 38.9 % (7-for-18) from behind the arc. The Cobbers enjoyed several large statistical advantages on the day. CC outrebounded the Saints 45-29 and had a 44-22 advantage in points in the paint. Concordia also forced 24 turnovers and used that to record a 31-7 edge in points off of turnovers.

Junior Maggie Bauernfeind led all scorers with 21 points. Last year's 6th Player of the Year in the MIAC, was 8-for-12 from the field and 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Lindsey Schultz finished with 15 points, had eight rebounds and was 7-for-11 from the floor. Sorbo added 13 points while junior guard Erica Nord earned the stat stuffer award for the game. Nord had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds. She also posted eight assists and two steals.

Concordia will now play host UW-Stevens Point in the championship game of the Pointer Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 3 p.m. The Pointers downed Rockford College 75-49 in the other semifinal on Friday.
