MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/22/10)-- Concordia's season came to a screeching stop on Monday as they into a red-hot shooting St. Kate's team and fell 79-65 in the MIAC quarterfinals. The Wildcats shot 53.6% from the floor and 50.0% from 3-point range as they claimed their first-ever conference tournament victory and became the first No.6 seed to win a game in conference tournament history.

The game was determined in a six-minute period midway through the second half. Concordia had cut the St. Kate's lead to just three points at 56-53 with 9:01 to play and appeared to have the momentum after allowing the Wildcats to grab a seven-point lead just minutes before. Last week the Cobbers were in a similar position against St. Kate's and went on a 7-0 run to seize control of the game and win by five. Unfortunately for CC that was last week and on Monday Concordia was never able to put together the much-needed run. Instead, the Wildcats outscored the Cobbers 10-2 during the game-changing stretch and took an 11-point lead at 66-55 with 3:20 to play.

In the six-minute time frame where the game slipped away, Concordia was 0-for-6 from the floor, 0-for-5 from 3-point range and committed four turnovers. On the other end of the court, St. Kate's went 5-for-7 from the floor and had three steals.

The Wildcats were able to hold on in the final three minutes of play due to their outstanding shooting from the free throw. Forced to foul in order to try and get back in the game, the Cobbers watched the Wildcats go 9-for-12 from the foul line in the final 1:20 which included making their final eight shots from the free throw line.

For the game Concordia shot 40.0% (26-for-65) from the field but just 24.1% (7-for-29) from 3-point range. While most of the Cobber long-range shots came at the end of the second half while they were pressing to get back in the game, CC was just 1-for-6 in the first 11 minutes of the second half when the game hung in the balance. Many of the Cobber outside looks were uncontested and the ball just refused to go in the basket.

Concordia had only two players finish in double figures for the game. Maggie Bauernfeind had a team-high 16 points while Lindsey Schultz added 13 points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season.

The St. Kate's starting front line of Amy Battey, Laura Kalbfell and Molly Peterson accounted for 45 points, hauled down 16 rebounds and continually set the table for the Wildcat offense the entire game. Kalbfell once again proved to be a thorn in the Cobbers' side as she had a game-high 23 points. She had 24 points against CC last Wednesday and averaged 19.67 points in the three meetings between the two teams this year. She also had a team-high seven rebounds and was 8-for-10 from the floor, 3-for-3 from 3-point range and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Peterson chipped in 12 points and Battey added 10 more.

Concordia finished the season with an 18-8 overall record and advanced to the MIAC playoffs for the eighth consecutive season. St. Kate's is now 12-14 on the year and will advance to play at top-seeded St. Ben's on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
